When searching homes for sale, we found our new home in a retired public school in Eastern Ontario Canada.
To top it off, we made vintage VW's a main feature of our home.
We call it the "Old Volks Home"
We are a retired couple who sold our lakeside executive home and converted a retired elementary school into an elegant private residence.
The 2000 sq. ft. gymnasium became the quintessential New York Loft with its floor to ceiling fireplace.
Then we renovated several classrooms, installing garage doors so that we could move our vintage VW's into the living area.
"The Old Volks Home"
The school is located in the heart of the 1000 Island district of southern Ontario, halfway between Toronto and Montreal, and only 10 minutes from the US border.
There are large marinas, fine dining, hospitals, village pubs and more, all within 15 minutes.
For major shopping, Kingston and Brockville are both less than 30 minutes away; Ottawa is 90 minutes; and Toronto is less than 3 hours.
Is it time to return to school?
An elementary school offered plenty of storage and a large living area, all on one level, with solid construction.
It has five acres of land so we could erect a building to hold our RV, car hauler, tractor and other equipment.
And...Trying to construct a home like this today would cost several million dollars.
The challenge was renovating and decorating a 1960's school to create something warm, inviting and spectacular.
